We're having twins!!! What?!?!
Cody wasn't able to go to my appointment with me so I asked him that morning, "do you want me to try and facetime you during the appointment or see if I can record a video"? He said record it since he had to work and didn't know if he'd be in a position to stop what he was doing to anwser the facetime call. My appointment was originally Tuesday and he had taken the day off to go with me but my appointment got rescheduled to the day before so he had to work during.
I got in the room and laid on the table. The technician said I could facetime my husband but I asked her if I could record instead. She said no. I told her to just proceed and I'd show Cody the pictures later. 2nd pregnancy and I figured there was only one baby in there so it wouldn't be anything new. Wrong!
The lady set the ultrasound thing on my stomach and pulled it away really fast. I saw 2 circles on the screen but figured those were other body parts, I don't know. Twins didn't even cross my mind.
The technician goes "you should try calling your husband". So I did...he answered! The 2nd he answered she put the thing back on my stomach and exclaims "it's twins!". We were both like "what?"! I put my phone camera on the screen so Cody could see and there were 2 babies in there. Both measuring on time with strong heartbeats.
Baby A: measuring 7 weeks 1day and had a heartbeat of 142 bpm
Baby B: measuring 7 weeks 0 days and had a heartbeat of 160 bpm
We were SO surprised! From what I read women can kind of tell it's twins from crazy twin dreams, higher HCG levels during initial blood work, more morning sickness, etc. I had none of that. My first HCG level at 3 & 1/2 weeks was 16. 48 hours later it was 45. Super low numbers, which to me and everyone else, indicated 1 baby. I kept telling Cody I felt way more nauseous this time, but I hadn't thrown up at all. My blood sugars were also way higher this time. I'm on more insulin now at 7 weeks than I was at 19 weeks last pregnancy. Sugar levels go up as your HCG level increases. Now since I have 2 babies growing, there's double the HCG hormone - so that makes sense now.
Yes, I took fertility meds to help me ovulate and get pregnant, and I knew there was a possibility I could release 2 eggs and have twins, but it NEVER crossed my mind that I could be pregnant with twins. My last pregnancy, I took fertility meds for months and ended up getting pregnant on the highest dose of the medication. It was my last cycle before my OB was going to send me to a fertility specialist. This time, I took the fertility meds 1 time and I took the lowest dose. So if I had 1 baby on the highest dose last time, I had no reason to think I'd have 2 babies on the lowest dose this time. I'm completely shocked.
With having an incompetent cervix, my OB will place a cerclage (where they stitch my cervix closed) at 12 weeks instead of the usual 13 weeks if it were a single baby. That'll be the first week of May.
I joined a twins pregnancy and support Facebook group. I've learned a lot already. I found out that there is a blood gender test you can do for twins that you can get done around 10 weeks and it'll tell you the gender of each baby. That said, we won't have to wait until the 20 week ultrasound to find out genders. We want to know now! Lol.
I read that when twins have separate sacs & placentas, which mine do, that it's more common to have a boy & a girl. It's less common for them to be both girls or both boys. We're hoping for one of each but will love them regardless.
My next appointment is April 16th with a nurse practitioner and it'll be via video chat. I think we just go over what to expect throughout this pregnancy, tests I'll be getting, appointments I'll have, when I'll be seeing maternal fetal medicine (high risk doctor), etc. Having twins and being high risk, I'll have appointments every 2 weeks. I'll be getting an ultrasound to have my cervix length checked to make sure it's staying thick, long, and closed - and to check on the babies of course. The only good thing about being high risk is the increased number of ultrasounds you get; I want to see those babies!
- until next time, thanks for following.
